With the recession deepening and companies laying off hundreds of thousands of workers monthly there is 1 way you can truly recession proof your life...
I am sharing some real world, personal job stories with you this week in a much-needed show. By the way: We discovered that employee handbooks are basically not enforcable many times, as it says at the bottom 'we can change these policies at any time'. Call in with your comments.
"There’s not white America, black America, Hispanic America — there’s just one. So why can't your black a** find a job? Get this, according to MSNBC, "experts are worried that many blacks will remain in crisis even as the economy begins to recover, largely because the recession has eliminated so many working-class jobs in sectors like manufacturing and retail that are likely to come back slowly, if at all." “Across the board right now the job prospects are slim, but for blacks even more so than average,” said Algernon Austin, director of the program on race, ethnicity and the economy at the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank that focuses on issues affecting lower to middle-income workers. The numbers illustrate the sheer depth of the problem black workers are facing. For all the gains that black workers have made over the past 20 years, everywhere from corporate boardrooms to the White House, there remains a persistent gap between black and white unemployment rates. Since the recession began in December 2007, the national unemployment rate has gone from 4.9 percent to 10.2 percent, while the the black unemployment rate has jumped from 8.9 percent to 15.7 percent, according to government figures. In addition, blacks have been more likely to drop out of the labor force altogether as many have become so discouraged about job prospects that they have stopped looking for work. Now the question is, what's next? Let's talk about joblessness and black folks, tonight on the slugfest... "If you can handle the truth."

Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ) is a network of people of faith that calls upon religious values in order to educate, organize, and mobilize the religious community in the United States on issues and campaigns that will improve wages, benefits, and conditions for workers, and give voice to workers, especially workers in low-wage jobs. Founded in 1996, IWJ envisions the religious community, acting on its values in creative and strategic ways, as a powerful leader in creating and sustaining a nation where all workers share in the prosperity of our society, enjoy the fundamental human right to organize, and lead dignified lives as a result of their labor.

Here at Work for Life, we want to help people find work at jobs that bring them not just money, but pleasure. Tonight, Madison Wisconsin, has a serious issue about workers right. The middle class workers are under attack like I have never dreamed could happen here in America. Republicans seem to think they can balance the budget by destroying the middle class workers. This situation could lead to the same thing in other states. If you are for the people, please call in and tell us why. If you stand with the Governor, please call in and tell you why. And if any listener is from Wisconsin, please call and tell you how you feel. #########
I have developed a sinking feeling about government union member workers being targeted by government elected officials. If we are going to accept a group of employees being able to divide, devour, and conquer, another group of employees, then they all should be on equal footing. Treat elected officials like hired employees. The election process becomes the hiring process. Then congress and senate are as other government employees. Then when America's economy is bad, and we need to cut government paychecks, or we need workers to pay more for benefits, or they abuse the rules they designed and passed into law, we can fire them. Congress and Senate alike. I said it before, and I am saying it again, our elected officials think they are better than the rest of America. They speak out both sides of their mouth, and say they are doing the work of the American people. They disregard the opposing party, as if you didn't vote for them, you do not count. Our elected officials do what they want; because they know the people will not take a stand. The fact is they are right. For if America as a whole would take a stand, many of the elected officials we have never would have been elected to any office. Come together America and not allow this attack on government employees. Fighting to win elections is not acceptable when the workers are being used. 30 million jobless Americans; now 56,000 government employees in Madison, Wisconsin facing wage cuts; Similar activities happening in Ohio. The elected officials are preparing to hire more people as soon as they can rig up this redistricting activity. When was the last time congress and senates gave themselves raises?
The features: 1) Lee Gerard on Sly In The Morning: Sly speaks to United Steel Workers President Leo Gerard about the myths behind free trade and how we fight for working people here in Wisconsin. 2) Walker: "Decertify State Unions" If you listen to Scott Walker and Milwaukee talk radio, State Workers are all lazy, overpaid, and have not sacrificed during the recession. These are nothing but lies and State Workers have been doing more with less for years now. Well Walker just upped his game and said he might decertify State unions, ending their ability to collectively bargain. Walker and State Republicans want to turn Wisconsin into a right to work state. Well its time for union members to start publicizing the heavy sacrifices they have taken during the economic downturn. Ending collective bargaining will hurt all workers, not just union members. 3) Along with music from The Gordons, James Taylor with Joni Mitchell, Pearl Jam and Mike Petrone
The oligarchy is stealing democracy in America by denying workers in this country the right to collectively bargain for wages and their working conditions.

Get a behind the scenes look at a new sitcom pilot "Workers Comp" starring Morgan Fairchild of Falcon Crest, David Proval of the Sopranos, Robert Carradine of Revenge of the Nerds and a great supporting cast. Joining us on the show today to discuss their creation is Dori Sperko (Executive Producer) and her daughter Castille Landon (Co-Creator/Writer) who are locals from right here in Brandenton, Florida. The show is loosely based on Doris experiences in the Workers Comp world as President of NELCO, a PEO located in Bradenton. Her daughter is an accomplished actress and writer who grew up watching many of the wacky Workers Comp situations that her mother experienced at NELCO. The pilot has already begun filming and Evan & I are fortunate to have them joining us today.
Lets talk about this very important act designed to help workers take care of themselves or their families without fear of losing his or her employment. Sounds good right? Of course, unless you work for a company with fewer then 50 people. Get fired up with me.
Late Fall 2010 marked the beginning of an ongoing struggle, on the campus of the University of Maryland, to completely wipe out all forms of discrimination, abuse and disrespect levied upon any employees. Within the past year a vast array of UMD employees began coming forwards with on the job allegations ranging from Sexual Abuse to Racial Discrimination. As each month passed, the allegations got more serious and more frequent. The Black Faculty and Staff chapter at the University of Maryland decided to take up the cause and to stand on the right side of justice and solidarity. Three forums were held and sponsored by BFSA in an effort to allow the employees to have an opportunity to tell their stories, voice their opinions, strategize, and to build solidarity with the broader campus community. Invisible Voices is a BFSA sponsored radio program geared at allowing these UMD employees an additional platform to let their voices be heard and to garner greater and broader support regarding this human and workers’ rights issue. This episode we will be joined by Andrea Zamudio who is a university alumnus and the Spanish to English (and vice versa) translator for all of the forums. She has also been working with a lot of the Latina women who came forward with allegations of sexual abuse and racial/cultural discrimination. Please tune in. Please visit the various websites below for news articles on this issue as well as a 56 page report produced by the BFSA, regarding this serious situation. www.bfsa.umd.edu http://www.diamondbackonline.com/news/staff-call-workplace-labor-camp-1.2133467
A recent report indicates that universities are failing to train future employees to cope with so-called big data or to manage business intelligence. If, as the McKinsey Global Institute states, the need for trained BI workers will exceed the actual workforce available by 60 percent in 2018, we have a problem. IT professionals will be looking at where and how to obtain people with the right skills to meet the needs of companies seeking the balance of business and IT skills required to cope with big data. And is this really an IT problem?
This episode we speak with Mike, a UMD Employee, who has his own story to share along with his thoughts on the current campaign for workers rights at the the University of Maryland. This episode we are joined by Samantha and Jack, University of Maryland students. These two students speak about why they are strong supporters of workers rights on campus. Samantha and Jack are adamant in regards to their disdain in the way that their school is treating, or allowing the the inhumane treatment, of many so-called "lower level" workers, most of which are Black and Latina women. Samantha and Jack represent a growing number of students who are upset about this current human rights issue on their campus! Employers are impressed with the reviewed working conditions for domestic workers that includes a Sh7,586 basic salary. However, the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) said they had warned the government the review will be difficult to implement.“We do support the new minimum wage. We alerted the government of the implications but nothing was done,” Executive director Jacqueline Mugo said. She said most households are unable to afford the new minimum wages for house helps, hence, the regulation is will increase unemployment.“We need to balance good payment and need to remain in employment,” Ms Mugo said.FKE was part of delegates at the 100th Annual Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in mid June who adopted a set of international standards aimed at improving the working conditions of domestic workers globally. The new ILO standards demand that domestic workers who babysit, care for the elderly, clean compounds and do other household chores must have the same basic labour rights as those available to other workers. The rights include favourable working hours, weekly rest of at least 24 consecutive hours, information on terms and conditions of employment and respect for fundamental principles and rights including the right to bargain for wages.
Poverty increases every time hundreds of public workers jobs are slashed. 300thousand jobs lost results in hundreds of thousands more people being affected. We are the American chain. We are not stronger than the weakest link. Poverty is the weakest link and we must fix that link in the American chain. Henry Ford said it, and it holds true. If you think you can or if you think you cannot, you are right. Tell Republicans public workers are always there for all Americans. They bring dedication, and hard work 24/7 for Americans. Why do people want to see public workers being tossed out like trash on garbage day to be taken to landfills to rot?
